Minnesota's men's tennis team was honored with the athletic department's top community service award among men's sports at the recent "Golden Goldys" awards banquet.

The Gopher tennis team received the award for amassing more most community service hours per athlete than any of the university's other men's sports teams. The women's track and field team received the women's sports award.

The squad spent time with all ages of the community from youths to senior citizens. As an entire team, the men's tennis team participated in an inner-city tennis event where the Gopher players hit with and connected with area youths. They also took part in a senior citizens tennis outing at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The Gophers assisted with the annual Hope Kids festival as a team and each individual player also participated in various community activities throughout the school year.

"This award is a great achievement for our team," Gophers' coach Geoff Young said. "But it's not all about receiving recognition. We take great pride in giving back to the community and the response we get from those involved is the best reward. I'm proud of our players and the commitment they've made to being quality role models as collegiate athletes."
