Edlin Advances to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier

University of Minnesota sophomore Michele Edlin (Jackson, Minn.) shot a 5-over 77 on June 2 at Woodhill Country Club in Wayzata, Minn. to advance to the sectional qualifier for the 2009 United States Women’s Open Golf Championship. The 2009 U.S. Women’s Open will take place July 6-12 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Penn.
Fellow Gopher sophomore Mary Narzisi (Omaha, Neb.) and former Gopher Karen Weiss each carded a 6-over par 78 and are listed as the third and second alternate, respectively, for the sectional qualifier. The sectional qualifier is scheduled for June 11 at Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, N.C. Weiss was the medalist of last year’s local qualifier at Woodhill.
Edlin (Jackson, Minn.) competed in all 11 of the team’s tournaments during her sophomore season with the Gophers. She averaged a career-low 79.62 in 32 rounds played and shot a 7-over 223 at the Las Vegas showdown for her best 54-hole score of the season and her career. Also, Edlin carded a 236 at the Winthrop Intercollegiate on Mar. 20-22 to finish in a tie for eighth, the best finish of her two-year Gopher career.
Narzisi also played in all 11 tournaments this season for the Gophers and was third on the team with a 79.5 stroke average. She recorded two top-20 finishes during the 2008-09 season, a tie for 15th finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational and a tie for 16th finish at the Badger Invitational. She posted a 225 at the Las Vegas Showdown, her lowest 54-hole score of the season.
