With a combined four Big Ten titles during the 2008-09 academic year, the Minnesota men’s and women’s cross country/track programs are proven leaders among their Big Ten competition.  Now a pair of awards programs sponsored by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) show the Golden Gopher teams are squarely among the nation’s elite programs as well.

The USTFCCCA has the John McDonnell Program of the Year award for the men and the Terry Crawford Program of the Year award for the women that are awarded annually to the institution that has achieved the most consistent success in the NCAA Championships for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

The Minnesota men’s program is tied for third place in the standings for the McDonnell award after posting a 15th-place showing in the NCAA Cross Country Championships and a tie for 14th-place in the NCAA Indoor Track Championships. Oregon, the national champion on both those meets, is in first place followed by Stanford. The Gophers are tied with Florida State for third. Wisconsin at No. 5 is the only other Big Ten school ranked in the top 10.

The Gopher women are also the top ranked Big Ten program in the standings for the Crawford award. Minnesota is sixth with a tie for 11th in the NCAA Cross Country meet and a tie for 12th in the NCAA Indoor Track Championships on its resume. Leading the pack is Florida State followed by Oregon, Texas Tech, Arizona State and Stanford. Michigan at No. 7 and Illinois in a tie for 10th are other Big Ten schools ranked in the top 10.
