Sicora Enjoys Success on ITA Summer Circuit

Michael Sicora’s semifinal appearance in Kalamazoo, Mich. highlighted Minnesota’s competition in the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s summer circuit.
Sicora reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles at Kalamazoo and played in the doubles final at Notre Dame. He also competed in a futures tournament in Illinois during the summer.
In Kalamazoo from July 11-14, Sicora won four consecutive straight-set matches to gain a berth in the semifinals where he lost to eventual champion Maxime Armengaud of Indiana 7-6 (5), 6-1.
In the quarterfinals, Sicora defeated second-seeded Jeremy Langer of Indiana 6-3, 6-1. He also posted wins over John Black 6-2, 6-1, Josh Stiles from Kenyon College (Ohio) 6-1, 6-2 and Connor Gilmore from Madison (Wis.) East High School 6-3, 6-3.
He competed with Notre Dame’s Takeshi Yoshii in doubles and won two matches before losing to Langer and Sebastian Gruter of Indiana 8-3 in the semifinals.
At Notre Dame from July 6-9, Sicora teamed with Notre Dame’s Brian Kelley in doubles, posting three consecutive wins to reach the final. Sicora and Kelley were seeded second and lost to third-seeded Alex DiValerio and Andy Pulido of Vanderbilt 8-6 in the title match.
In singles, Sicora received a first round bye before downing Alex Toliver from Indiana Cathedral High School 6-3, 6-4 and then losing to Western Michigan’s Casey Cullen 6-3, 6-3.
Sicora played in a tennis futures tournament in Godfrey, Ill. and battled Clint Bowles from Florida State to a 6-2, 6-4 loss. Bowles finished the college season ranked 56th in the country.
Minnesota’s Phillip Arndt competed in an International Tennis Federation challenger event in Lexington, Ky. and lost to Austin Krajicek of Texas A&M 7-5, 6-1 in the first round of qualifying. Krajicek finished the college season ranked 53rd in the nation.
