Gophers Win 400 Free Relay At U.S. Open

The Gopher 400-meter freestyle relay team won the gold medal Wednesday evening on the second night of the U.S. Open in Federal Way, Wash. Senior Alex Wold also broke the school varsity long course record in the 400 individual medley to highlight Minnesota's performances on Wednesday.
In the final event of the night, Michael Richards, Curt Carlson, Steve Miller and Alex Wold turned in a time of 3:20.64 to beat Wildcat Aquatic's time of 3:21.04. The time also broke the previous school record by over four seconds. The victory also vaulted the Minnesota Aquatics team into third place overall with 90 points, just 18 behind leader Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics.
Earlier in the night, Wold continued a fantastic summer of competition by crushing his own school record in the 400-meter IM, taking third place in 4:16.75. He dropped over two seconds off his preliminaries time from the morning. Wold finaled in the 200-meter butterfly on Tuesday, finishing eighth. Richard Hills (63rd) and Rob Schaefer (65th) also took the blocks in the prelims but did not advance to the evening session.
Minnesota had two finalists in the 100-meter freestyle. Carlson placed seventh in a time of 50.36 while Miller took eighth in 50.48. Kevin Baseheart also reached the C Final where he placed 20th with a time of 50.93. Richards also finished 30th in 51.22.
