Four members of the men's tennis team are competing in the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship in Norman, Okla. The event, which is being held at both the Headington Family Tennis Center and the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion, began today and concludes on Monday, Oct. 25.

The four Gophers competing are seniors Sebastian Gallego and Tobias Wernet, junior Phillip Arndt and sophomore Rok Bonin. All four are playing in the 64-player singles draw and doubles as well. Gallego is seeded fifth and Wernet is seeded ninth in singles. In doubles, Gallego and Arndt are seeded second.

All four Gophers won their opening-round singles matches. Gallego triumphed 6-4, 6-1 versus Wichita State freshman Guillermo Nicol, while Wernet beat Oklahoma freshman John Warden 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Arndt dropped Nebraska junior Christopher Aumueller 6-4, 6-4 and Bonin, who won the DU Pioneer Invitational earlier this year, took down Nebraska sophomore Eric Sock 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, the 28th-ranked duo of Gallego and Arndt defeated Big Ten rivals Marc Bruche and Jonas Dierckx from Iowa 9-7 before beating Gregoire Lehmann and Nikolas Zogaj from Arkansas to advance to the quarterfinals. On the other end of the bracket, Bonin and Wernet began doubles play with an 8-6 win against Peerakit Siributwong and Tsvetan Mihov from Oklahoma. They then beat Creighton's JT Christian and Billy Paluch 9-7 to advance to the quarterfinals. Minnesota's doubles team can only meet if both of them advance to the final.
