Minnesota assistant coaches Luke Becker and Brandon Eggum traveled with Yohn to Italy, and all three blogged for Gophersports.com during their journey. Here are Becker's posts from the first two days in Italy.
Monday Oct. 25th
1st day in Italy. Brandon, I, and Sonny woke up to woke up and went to find some breakfast. Mondays must be a slow day because there are not a lot of restaurants open. We found a little coffee shop that had sandwiches and a Gatorade.
At about 3:30 we went over to workout at the training facility. The facility was a separate site than the competition venue. It was a little gym that had 2 mats, 2 treadmills, and 2 bikes. There were a few free weight there as well. They had a sauna in the locker room as well. Sonny and Brandon did about an hour workout. They did the majority of it on the mat. The plan was for sonny to get a good blow in. He ran a little to get warmed up, then they drilled for about 20mins. Then Sonny did some stance and motion. They did a little more wrestling top and bottom. Eggum said sonny felt real good and got a good blow in.
When we were done working out we went back to the hotel and go out to dinner. We found a good Italian restaurant to go to in the city center. We were in the middle of rush hour and it was a bit scary. They drive crazy over here. Eggs did a good job though. By the end of the drive he was driving just like everybody else.
Tuesday Oct. 26th
Today was the first day of the tournament. USA had 4 of there guys wrestling. (Angel Escabado 55kg, Kevin Lavalle 66kg, Marty Usman 84kg, and Zach Rey 120kg) We went over to watch the 1st couple of rounds, until Sonny had to go over to workout.
Brandon and Sonny went over to the workout facility to workout at about 130. They did about the same as yesterday. Sonny didn't have to worry much about his weight so the workout was just to blow out his lungs. Eggs said the workout went really well.
They went right from the workout over to the competition site where they weigh-in. Weigh-ins are at 4 o'clock. When they are done with weigh-ins they will come back to the hotel and we will get Sonny some food. Then go over to watch the finals at 630 tonight.
