Gophers Open Fall Season with Two Wins

The University of Minnesota rowing team opened its 2010-2011 season on Sunday with two varsity victories in the Head of the Mississippi, hosted by the Minneapolis Rowing Club. The Gophers competed in five events, each of which resulted in first place finishes for the Gophers.

In the 10:00 a.m. Women's Collegiate 4+, the Gophers took the top two spots. The B boat of Molly Kalmoe, Teresa Logemann, Tracy Merth, Becky Kinchen, and coxswain Linnea Trandem won the event with a time of 15:02. Minnesota's A boat, consisting of Sarah Krueger, Cassie Drozynski, Erika Berg, Rachel Sartor, and coxswain Sara Baldvins, finished a close second with a time of 15:12. Boat D rowers Alexandria Voss, Alyssa Trelstad, Mikaela Rogers, Jennifer VanVliet, and coxswain Adriana Gutierrez finished fourth with a time of 16:28. In sixth place with a time of 17:55 were Allison Putlak, Kayla Thom, Kate Ladell, Ellen Hughes, and coxswain Natalie Foshag of Boat C.

The Gophers' three Collegiate 8+ boats enjoyed similar success, sweeping the top three spots in the 2:30 p.m. event. Minnesota's B boat of Sartor at stroke, Logemann, Kathryn Switalski, Krystal Arbery, Kayla Thom, Leah Rogotzke, Kalmoe, Kinchen at bow, and Emilie Sabourin at coxswain won it in 13:45. In second place with a time of 13:50 was Minnesota's A boat, consisting of coxswain Trandem, Krueger at stroke, Merth, Berg, Drozynski, Manovich, Brzozowski, Ladell, and Hughes at bow. Minnesota's C boat, which finished third at 14:27, contained coxswain Fisher, Maddy Bourgeois at stroke, Putlak, Katrina Pichelli, Christine Beauparlant, Caitlin Boon, Ali Haws, Voss, and Katie Anderson at bow.

The first race of the day, the 9:15 a.m. Women's Masters 2x, also resulted in a Gophers victory. Minnesota's B boat of Nicolle Fisher and Debbie Brzozowski took the top spot with a raw time of 17:09, while the A boat of Ellen Manovich and Arbery finished third at 19:07.

In both the Women's Freshman/Novice Collegiate 8+ and Collegiate 4+, the Gophers sent out the event's only boat. In the 11:25 Collegiate 8+, rowers Deena Altschwager, Kathryn DeSmidt, Emily Smoter, Katherine Moran, Cameo Kale, Katherine Rosploch, Rebecca Curtis, Amber Meyer, and coxswain Olivia Vlahos took first with a time of 18:25. In the 3:10 Collegiate 4+, Minnesota's boat of Sarah Sobek, Amelia Black, Katrina Becker, Molly Gruber, and coxswain Vlahos won with a time of 17:17.

Minnesota will compete next on Oct. 10 at the Head of the Rock in Rockford, Ill.
