Max Cartwright, a native of Edina, Minn., has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the University of Minnesota men’s swimming & diving team, announced Golden Gopher coaches Dennis Dale and Bill Tramel. Cartwright will join the Gopher program in the 2011-12 season.
“We targeted Max long ago,” said Tramel. “He swims for two fantastic coaches in Kate Lundsten and the legendary Art Downey at Edina High School. I enjoyed watching Max really mature as an athlete this past summer at Junior Nationals in Irvine, California. However, everyone knows that Max’s best swimming is ahead of him. The fact that he is a Minnesota resident carries on a long tradition of the best Minnesota swimmers taking advantage of the great opportunities our state’s flagship university offers. Max intends to major in engineering, an exceptional degree program at Minnesota. We are thrilled to have such a balanced person join our family.”
Cartwright helped Edina High School its third consecutive Minnesota Class AA state team title last spring. As a junior, Cartwright was the state runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.71 seconds. Cartwright also competes for the Aquajets Swim Club.
Cartwright’s other top times are: 56.40, 100 breast; 2:00.86 – 200 breast, 1:06.06 - 100 breast LCM, 2:20.95 - 200 breast LCM, 1:53.69 – 200 IM, 4:00.21 – 400 IM.
