Four members of the University of Minnesota men's tennis team continued play at the Metlife Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Tampa, Fla., on Saturday. The tournament, which features eight teams from around the country, began on Friday and ends Sunday.
Representing Minnesota are seniors Tobias Wernet and Sebastian Gallego, junior Julian Dehn, and sophomore Rok Bonin.
Bonin, after defeating Nassim Slilam of Florida and Christian Blocker of Miami in the first two singles rounds on Friday advanced to the semifinals on Saturday before falling to Sekou Bangoura of Florida. Bonin beat Miami's Eduardo Pavia in straight sets to begin the day, but his finals bid fell short when he lost to Bangoura 6-1, 6-4. Bangoura also eliminated Wernet from singles contention in the quarterfinals.
Dehn defeated Carl Sundberg of Miami in the second round of consolation competition with a three-set win. Dehn won the tiebreaking third set in close fashion, 10-8, after taking the first set 6-3 and losing 6-2 in the second set.
Both Minnesota doubles pairs advanced to the semifinals to be played on Sunday. Wernet and Gallego moved on with a win by default against Florida's Slilam and Billy Federhoffer, while Bonin and Dehn took down Miami's Pavia and Waylon Chin, 8-1.
