The Minnesota men’s swimming team’s performance at Saturday’s final session of the Minnesota Grand Prix was highlighted by one individual and a relay posting NCAA “B” qualifying times.

Matt Benecki placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4 minutes, 28.14 seconds to grab the Gophers’ individual “B” qualifier. The Gophers ended the evening by placing second in the 800 free relay where the foursome of Kevin Baseheart, Curt Carlson, Matt Papenfuss and Kyler Van Swol clocked a “B” time of 6:41.58.

The highest individual finish of the night was turned in by Ivan Gutesa in the 200 breast. Gutesa placed third in a time of 2:02.03.

Senior sprinters Michael Richards and Carlson finished fifth and sixth in the 50 free. Richards was timed in 20.30 seconds, while Carlson touched in 20.44 seconds.

Van Swol and Baseheart finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. Van Swol posted a time of 1:49.07, to 1:49.60 for Baseheart.

Perhaps the most exciting final of the night was the 100 back where Gopher alum David Plummer, the reigning US champion in the event, squared off against Olympians Ryan Lochte and Ricky Behrens. Lochte won the title with a time of 46.42, edging Plummer who was timed in 46.72. Behrens was third (47.34).

The Minnesota Grand Prix concludes on Sunday with the prelims at 9 a.m. and the final session beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is $10.
