Alejandro “Alex” Cisneros, of Garden Grove, Calif., has signed a National Letter of Intent to swim at the University of Minnesota, Golden Gopher coaches Dennis Dale and Bill Tramel announced. Cisneros will join the program in the 2011-12 season.
Cisneros is a senior at Rancho Alamitos High School. He swims for the Mission Viejo Nadadores under the direction of Coach Bill Rose. Cisneros has top times of 4:33.60 in the 500 freestyle, 1:50.53 in the 200 fly, 2:03.79 in the fly long course and 4:33.39 in the long course 400 individual medley.
“I first met Alex when he approached me at Irvine Juniors this past summer,” said Tramel. “He told me he loved Minnesota and as a kid, always talked about going to Minnesota. We are very happy to have him officially join the Gopher family. There are so many things I love about Alex. He is incredibly versatile and can swim almost any event we ask. He has great range as the distance goes up.
“He comes from a swimming family with siblings swimming at the Division I level,” Tramel added. “However, the thing I like most is the fact that Alex trains with Coach Rose at Mission Viejo. I love signing guys from Mission because I know exactly what I am getting. They are all well-disciplined, extremely hard workers who pay attention to the little things. Alex is no exception. He already has developed his kick-outs and has the discipline to execute the details of a race. Alex is just starting to come on the national scene. He qualified for Olympic Trials this summer and we anticipate he will be even better once he arrives in Minneapolis next fall.”
