Gophers Cruise to Win Over Iowa

Senior All-American Michael Richards clocked an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 20.30 seconds in winning the 50-yard freestyle to highlight the individual performances in the pool. Richards also anchored both the Golden Gopher relays, the 200 medley and the 400 free, to victory. He teamed with Nadav Kochavi, Ivan Gutesa and Kevin Baseheart to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.22. The 400 free relay consisted of Curt Carlson, Zach Bolin, Baseheart and Richards and touched in a time of 2:58.44, an NCAA “B” qualifier.
Senior Drew Brown was the top performer in the diving events, sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Brown won the 1-meter event with a score of 318.82 points, then scored the double with a win on the 3-meter board with a score of 356.10 points.
Matt Benecki and Gutesa were also double winners for the Gophers. Benecki swam to an easy victory the 1,000 free clocking a time of 9:16.93 to win by over six seconds. He added the double winning the 500 free in 4:32.02. Gutesa swept the breaststroke events to remain undefeated on the season, winning the 100 breast in 55.90 seconds and the 200 breast in 2:03.48.
Baseheart and Carlson added individual titles to their relay wins. Baseheart won the 200 butterfly in 1:50.51, while Carlson took first in the 100 free in 44.07.
Concluding the list of Gopher event champions was Kyler Van Swol in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.22.
Minnesota hosts North Carolina in a dual meet on Saturday at noon.
