For the Gophers, Ivan Gutesa remains undefeated in the breaststroke events this season. He swam season-best times of 55.83 in the 100-yard breast and 2:01.22 in the 200.
Curt Carlson also won two events for Minnesota. He won his first 200 freestyle of the season with an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 1:38.01. Carlson added a victory in the 100 free, clocking in at 44.59.
Michael Richards in the 50 free (20.11), Matt Benecki in the 500 free (4:29.27), and Kris Jorgensen in 3-meter diving (372.30) were the Gophers’ other individual champions. Those three performances were all season bests.
Minnesota split the relays, winning the 400 free relay and coming in second in the 200 medley relay. The 400 relay squad of Carlson, Zach Bolin, Kevin Baseheart, and Richards posted another ‘B’ time of 2:57.83.
Tommy Wyher won two individual events for the Tar Heels and also helped his 200 medley relay team get an early lead. Wyher won the 100 back (48.26) and 100 fly (48.15), both ‘B’ qualifying times.
“I learned that (the Gophers) are tough,” said Minnesota head coach Dennis Dale of today’s meet. “They came back after a good meet last night and swam against a very, very good North Carolina team, and I think we gave them all they could handle…We had a little more depth than we knew. I was kind of excited. I was a little concerned that (the Tar Heels) would get the steamroller going and we wouldn’t be able to stop them, but our guys did a great job, I thought.”
The Gophers will host the Minnesota Grand Prix Nov. 12-14 at the University Aquatic Center.
