Grant Alef, of Maple Park, Ill., has signed a National Letter of Intent to swim at the University of Minnesota, Golden Gopher coaches Dennis Dale and Bill Tramel announced. Alef will join the Gophers in the 2011-12 season.
A senior at Kaneland High School, Alef swims for the Kishwaukee YMCA/Dekalb County under the direction of Coach Brian Bickner. Alef is a 26-time YMCA National All-American, including national finishes of second in the 200 backstroke and fourth in the 100 back at the 2010 YMCA Nationals. He was honored as a 2009 and 2010 USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and as the 2010 Kane Country Chronicle Swimmer of the Year.
Alef owns top times of 51.19 seconds in the 100 back and 1:50.18 in the 200 back.
“We are thrilled to add Grant Alef to this awesome class we are building here at Minnesota,” said Tramel. “Grant lives just west of Chicago. He is not only another great Illinois swimmer who will attend Minnesota, but also a very accomplished cross country runner. He should make an immediate impact in our backstroke events. Grant is also a very academically gifted student and has been admitted to our prestigious College of Science and Engineering. Minnesota is a perfect fit for Grant.”
