Drew Brown Wins 1M Diving at Georgia Invite

Minnesota senior Drew Brown captured the 1-meter diving title at the Georgia Invitational to highlight the Golden Gopher men’s swimming & diving team’s performance in the first day of the meet in Athens, Ga. Brown tallied a season-high score of 371.50 points.
The Gopher swimmers collected four NCAA “B” qualifying marks in the first day of the three-day invitational.
Senior Michael Richards led the charge by placing third in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 19.97 seconds. It was the first sub 20-second race of the season for the Gopher school record holder in the event. Senior Curt Carlson added a seventh-place showing in a time of 20.20. He swam a season-best time of 20.17 in the prelims.
Richards and Carlson teamed with Zach Bolin and Goran Majlat to place second in the 200 free relay in a time of 1;19.12.
Matt Benecki collected the fourth NCAA qualifier with a seventh-place time of 4:24.98 in the 500 free.
In addition to Brown winning the 1-meter diving, two other Gophers placed in the top four. Kris Jorgensen finished third with 335.10 points, while Turner Eckstrom was fourth with 309.30.
The Georgia Invitational continues through Sunday.
