Van Swol Leads Gophers at Georgia Invitational

Minnesota freshman Kyler Van Swol placed second in the 100-yard butterfly to pace the Golden Gopher men’s swimming & diving team at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga., on the Saturday. Van Swol clocked a time of 47.86 seconds, a season best and an NCAA “B” qualifier.
The Gophers tallied three other “B” qualifiers in competition on Saturday. Ivan Gutesa swam a time of 54.78 in finishing third in the 100 breast. Curt Carlson tabbed another “B” qualifier in the 200 free with his sixth-place finish in 1:38.61. He swam a faster time of 1:38.11 in the prelims. The 4x800 free relay added to the list of “B” qualifiers while finishing fourth in 6:34.93. Swimming on the relay was Mike Vernoia, Carlson, Matt Papenfuss and Hrvoje Capan.
In addition to Gutesa, three other Gophers competed in the championship final in the 100 breast, all clocked season-best times. Josh Hall finished fifth in 55.54, Jared Anderson seventh in 56.19 and Evan Lee-To eighth in 56.35.
Kevin Baseheart competed in the championship final in the 100 fly, finishing sixth in 49.01.
Drew Brown added a third-place finish in 3-meter diving with a score of 352.60.
