Gopher Finish Third in Georgia Invitational

The Minnesota men’s swimming & diving team finished third in the Georgia Invitational, while claiming four NCAA “B” qualifying in the third and final day of competition. Auburn won the Invitational, followed by host Georgia and Minnesota.

Senior Michael Richards posted an NCAA “B” qualifier in the 100 freestyle then helped the 400 free relay to a national time standard as well. Richards clocked a season-best time of 44.03 seconds in the 100 free to finish fourth. He teamed with Curt Carlson, Zach Bolin and Kyler Van Swol to place third in a time of 2:57.30.

The Gophers had two swimmers finish with season-best times in the championship final of the 200 butterfly. Kevin Baseheart placed fourth with a NCAA “B” time of 1:47.08. Van Swol was sixth with a “B” time of 1:47.89.

Other top finishers were Drew Brown, third in platform diving (322.85); Ivan Gutesa, fifth in the 200 breast (2:00.11); Josh Hall, seventh in the 200 breast (2:01.91); Carlson, eighth in the 100 free (44.56) and Matt Benecki, eighth in the 1,650 free (15:45.09).
