Gophers Enjoy Solid Day One at Iowa State Classic

Minnesota’s pole vaulters Alicia Rue, Samantha Sonnenberg and Becca Pilkerton topped the list of Golden Gopher women’s track & field team performers in action on Friday at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Rue placed second with a height of 14 feet, 3 1/4 inches, her fourth NCAA automatic qualifier of the season.

Sonnenberg improved on her third-ranked vault in school history by clearing a personal best of 13-5 1/2, an NCAA provisional qualifier. Pilkerton also marked a career best, clearing 12-11 1/2, moving up to the No. 5 spot in Gopher history.

Minnesota had two sprinters join the Gophers’ top-10 list in the 200-meter dash. Rikita Butler clocked a fifth-place time of 24.53 seconds to claim the fifth-best mark in school history. Kylie Peterson crossed the finish line in 24.70 seconds, the seventh-fastest time in Gopher history to place eighth at the Classic. Nyoka Giles notched a season-best time of 24.95 to place 12th.

Other Gophers tallying top finishes were Todea-Kay Willis, who placed second in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 2 1/2 inches, and DeAnne Hahn, who was sixth in the weight throw with an effort of 58-5 1/4.

The Iowa State Classic concludes with a full day of events on Saturday.
