2/19/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Despite a career-high seven three-point field goals by Kiara Buford, Minnesota was defeated at Iowa by a score of 75-54. Buford finished with 23 points as the only Golden Gopher in double figures.

Iowa has won seven of its last eight games and with the victory over the Gophers improved to 15-11 overall and 8-7 in Big Ten play. Minnesota has lost eight of its last nine and slips to 12-14 overall and 5-10 in league action.

The Hawkeyes made five of their first six field goal attempts to jump out to an early 11-3 lead and never looked back. A basket by Kachine Alexander, who notched impressive numbers with 14 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists, at the 11:51 mark doubled up the Gophers at 20-10. Minnesota was never able to bring the deficit into single digits from that point on.

Iowa shot 63 percent in first half, including 8-of-13 from three-point range, to take a commanding 50-28 lead at halftime. The only bright spot for the Gophers was Buford, who had four three-pointers in the first half.

The Gophers came out in the second half looking to make a game of it. Minnesota outscored the Hawkeyes by a 20-11 margin in the first 10 minutes of the half. A lay-up by Brianna Mastey brought the Gophers to within 13 points at 61-48 with 10:14, but it was as close the Gophers could get. Alexander halted the Minnesota rally with a three-point play sparking a 10-0 Iowa run that put the game out of reach.

Brittany McCoy added 10 assists in the game, several on Buford baskets.

Minnesota finished the game shooting 30.3 percent and made just six trips to the free throw line (making four). The Gophers committed only eight turnovers, a season low.

Iowa shot 46.7 percent from the floor and made 10-of-22 from long range (45.5 percent). The Hawkeyes also benefitted from a dominating 48-33 advantage on the boards and amassed 13 blocked shots. Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate Jaime Printy and Kamille Wahlin led Iowa with 15 points apiece. Freshman center Morgan Johnson added 12 points, seven rebounds and eight blocks.

The last time a Golden Gopher hit seven three-point field goals in a game as on Dec. 4, 2008, when Katie Ohm hit seven triples versus Boston College.
