Gophers Split Action at Double Duals

The University of Minnesota rowing team competed in the Big Ten Double Duals, as well as Louisville, today at Lake McBride in Iowa City, Iowa. The Golden Gophers fell in both the First Varsity Eight races, split action in the Second Varsity Eight, won both the Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four events, split their action in the Novice Eight and fell in the both races in the Second Novice Eight. Minnesota fell to Iowa in the scoring, 43-35, but edged out Louisville, 31-29 today.
The Gophers' top boat of the First Varsity Eight started its day against Iowa. The boat of Linnea Trandem, Tracy Merth, Teresa Logemann, Cassie Drozynski, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham, Rachel Sartor and Rebekah Brzozowski held a time of 7:24.8, but Iowa won the race with a 4.9 second lead and finished in 7:20.0. In the afternoon session, the Gophers drew Louisville. The Cardinals, who defeated Wisconsin in the morning session, held a 6.8 second lead over the Gophers. Louisville crossed the finish line in 7;03.2 to Minnesota's time of 7:09.9.
Minnesota's Second Varsity Eight fell to Iowa in the morning session, but defeated Louisville in the afternoon to split its action. The Gopher boat, which contained Sara Baldvins, Michele Peterson, Christine Cira, Erika Berg, Debbie Brzozowski, Katelyn Nichols, Alyssa Kast, Sarah Krueger and Becky Kinchen finished in 7:11.5. Iowa, however, crossed the line in 7:09.1 to win the event. The Gophers, rebounded with a win over Louisville in the afternoon session. Minnesota cruised to the finish line when it finished 7.3 seconds ahead of the Cardinals with a 7:16.5 time to their time of 7:23.7.
The Gophers' Varsity Four earned two wins over Iowa and Louisville today. The Gophers sprinted the finish line when they held a 29.9 advantage over the Hawkeyes in the morning session. The Gopher boat of Nicolle Fisher, Christine Beauparlant at stroke, Kathryn Switalski, Alli Fast and Shannon Gates, finished in a time of 8:00.5 to Iowa in 8:30.4. In the afternoon session, Minnesota held an even larger win margin when it posted a time of 8:03.6 to 8:45.2, a 41.6-second swing.
Like the Minnesota's Second Varsity Eight, the Gophers' Second Varsity Four split its action. Minnesota defeated Wisconsin and Iowa in both the morning and afternoon sessions. In the morning race, Minnesota held a 6-second lead over the Badgers for the win when it crossed the line in 8:10.0. The Gophers' Second Varsity Four was Adriana Gutierrez as coxswain, Megan Lenarz, Grace Lorig, Kate Ladell and Elyse Weir at bow.
In the Novice Eight action, Minnesota fell to Iowa, but rebounded for a win over Louisville in the afternoon session. Minnesota's boat of Emilie Sabourin, Alexandria Voss, Allison Putlak, Kalya Thom, Alli Haws, Liz Saindon, Katie Anderson, Arielle Flynn and Natalie Reker fell to Iowa (7:29.1 to 7:41.1). The Gophers' 1N8 then won over the Cardinals by 28 seconds in 8:00.7 to 8:28.9.
Minnesota's Second Novice Eight of Alicia Gruenwald, Natalie Foshag, Elizabeth Barnes, Alyssa Trelstad, Andrea Beczkiewicz, Jenessa White, Jennifer VanVliet, Katherina Busch, Jessica Tiffany finished second to Wisconsin in both races. The Badgers clocked winning times of 7:31.3 and 7:56.5 to Minnesota's times of 8:04.6 and 8:28.9. Iowa came in third in 9:00.8 and 8:40.6.
