Gophers Complete First Day of Lake Natoma Invite

The University of Minnesota rowing team competed at the Lake Natoma Invite, today, at Gold River, Calif. The Golden Gophers, who traveled the First Varsity Eight, the Second Varsity Eight and the First Varsity Four, will conclude the invite tomorrow morning. Co-host California leads the competition, with 36 points, followed by Stanford - 32, 3) Washington State - 32, 4) Wisconsin - 29, 5) Tennessee - 25 6) Louisville - 20, 7) Minnesota - 17, 8) Sacramento State - 13, 9) Texas - 12. The Gophers will face Sacramento State and Texas tomorrow morning.

In the morning session, the Gophers finished second and third in the three races. In the First Varsity Eight, Minnesota's boat of Linnea Trandem, Tracy Merth, Teresa Logemann, Cassie Drozynski, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham, Rachel Sartor and Rebekah Brzozowski placed third in their respective heat. The Gophers drew No. 14 Washington State and No. 19 Tennessee for the morning session. WSU won the heat in a time of 6:33.00, while Tennessee was second (6:34.01) and Minnesota was third (6:45.34).

In the Second Varsity Eight, Minnesota finished third in its heat behind Tennessee and Washington State. The Gopher boat of Sara Baldvins, Alli Fast, Christine Cira, Erika Berg, Debbie Brzozowski, Katelyn Nichols, Alyssa Kast, Sarah Krueger and Becky Kinchen clocked a time of 6:49.50, but WSU was second in 6:42.00 and Tennessee was first in 6:39.40.

Minnesota held its highest finish in the morning session when the Varsity Four placed second in its heat. Coxswain Nicolle Fisher, along with Christine Beauparlant, Kathryn Switalski, Shannon Gates and Michele Peterson combined for a second-place time of 7:30.30, but WSU earned three points and the win in 7:22.90, while Tennessee followed with 7:44.00. 

In the afternoon session, Minnesota won the Varsity Four heat, finished second in the 2V8 and third in the 1V8. The Gophers started the afternoon session with a win in the V4 competition. Minnesota won the event over Stanford and Louisville in a time of 7:42.6. Stanford was second (7:45.07), while Louisville was third (8:29.44). The Gophers then competed in race 16 and placed second behind Stanford in the 2V8. Stanford won the race in 6:55.3, followed by the Gophers (7:06.84) and Louisville was third (7:16.76). The Gophers' 1V8 faced No. 3 Stanford and Louisville and finished third in their respective race. Stanford flew to the finish line with a time of 6:52, while Louisville was second (7:04.3) and Minnesota was third (7:05.21).
