After winning his last five matches of the season, Minnesota junior Sebastian Gallego sealed a spot on the all-Big Ten men's tennis squad, which was announced Thursday at the league banquet in Bloomington, Ind.
Gallego finished the regular season 19-10 and was 5-4 in Big Ten singles play. He enters the Big Ten tournament this weekend ranked 64th in the nation individually. It is the first career all-conference selection for the Medellin, Colombia native, who played nearly the entire spring season at both No. 1 singles and doubles. He was last season's team Most Valuable Player.
Gallego is 5-7 against ranked opponents and recently defeated two ranked foes in one weekend, including 22nd-ranked Marek Michalicka from Wisconsin, to earn Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors.
In doubles, Gallego is 12-12 for the season and has gone 12-9 in dual matches with Phillip Arndt. Gallego and Arndt have been nationally ranked in doubles for much of the season.
Conference champion Ohio State landed the Athlete of the Year in Chase Buchanan and the Coach of the Year in Ty Tucker. Michigan's Evan King was the Freshman of the Year.
Minnesota junior Tobias Wernet earned a spot on the conference's all-sportsmanship team.
The Gophers are 13-9 overall and ranked 32nd in the country. They open Big Ten tournament play on Friday against 27th-ranked Wisconsin.
