Gophers Set to Compete at Sprints

The University of Minnesota rowing team will compete at the annual South/Central Sprints this weekend. The Golden Gophers will travel the First Varsity Eight, the Second Varsity Eight and the Varsity Four to the sprints. Action starts on Saturday morning with the heats and continue Saturday afternoon with the finals on Sunday.

WHO'S WHO
The Golden Gophers are one of 24 teams competing this weekend. All teams from the Big Ten will be in attendance as well as Kansas, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan and Dayton from the Central region. From the South is Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisville, SMU, Tulsa, Alabama, Miami, Virginia, Texas, Central Florida, Clemson and Duke.

THE GOPHER COMPETITION
The Gophers will compete against Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame in the Varsity Four heat. In the Second Varsity Eight, the Gophers drew Iowa, Texas and Central Florida, while they drew Iowa, Louisvill and Texas in the 1V8 competition. The top three finishers in each heat will advance to the A/B Semifinals, while the 4-6 finishers go to the C/D Semifinals Saturday afternoon.

COMPETING THIS WEEKEND
Minnesota's lineups remain the same as it was at the Big Ten Championships. In the Varsity Four is coxswain Nicolle Fisher, Christine Beauparlant, Kathryn Switalski, Shannon Gates and Michele Peterson  The Second Varsity Eight will contain coxswain Sara Baldvins, Teresa Logemann at stroke, Christine Cira, Katelyn Nichols, Debbie Brzozowski, Alli Fast, Alyssa Kast, Becky Kinchen and Rachel Sartor at bow. In the Gophers' top boat is coxswain Linnea Trandem, Cassie Drozynski, Erika Berg, Tracy Merth, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Krueger, Sarah Graham and Rebekah Brzozowski at bow. 

LAST YEAR AT THE SPRINTS
The Golden Gophers finished sixth in the Central Region with three boats competing in finals. Minnesota's Varsity Four finished third in the Grand Final. Ohio State won the race in a time of 6:58.0, while Virginia was second, finishing in 6:59.3. The Gophers rounded out the top three, completing the race in a time of 7:00.6. The Second Varsity Eight finished third in the Petite Final with a time of 6:31.6, while the Gophers' First Varsity Eight finished third in the Petite Final.
