Gophers Finish First Day At Sprint Regionals

The University of Minnesota rowing team completed the first day of the two-day Aramark South/Central Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Melton Hill Lake. Minnesota will compete in the B Finals tomorrow morning, starting at 11:10 a.m. (ET).
Minnesota advanced all three boats to the semifinals after the morning session, but fell to the Petite, or B Final, after the afternoon session. The Gophers’ First Varsity Eight of coxswain Linnea Trandem, Cassie Drozynski, Erika Berg, Tracy Merth, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Krueger, Sarah Graham and Rebekah Brzozowski at bow placed third in their morning heat. Michigan won the heat in 6:47.80, followed by Wisconsin in 6:50.94 and Minnesota in 6:59.06 to advance to the A/B Semifinals. The Gophers finished fifth in the semifinal in a time of 6:50.58. No. 9 Michigan State cruised to a semifinal win in a time of 6:33.60, followed by No. 13 Michigan in 6:36.70 and No. 16 Tennessee in third (6:37.53) to advance to the A Final. Minnesota will face Oklahoma, Ohio State, Iowa, Notre Dame and Louisville at 11:50 a.m. (ET).
The Gophers’ Second Varsity Eight kicked off the morning session with a third-place finish in its heat. The Gophers just missed second place. Wisconsin took the heat win in 6:52.10. Notre Dame edged out the Gophers with a time of 7:03.03, while the Maroon and Gold were third in 7:03.55. In Minnesota’s boat was coxswain Sara Baldvins, Teresa Logemann at stroke, Christine Cira, Katelyn Nichols, Debbie Brzozowski, Alli Fast, Alyssa Kast, Becky Kinchen and Rachel Sartor at bow. In the afternoon’s semifinals, Minnesota’s 2V8 finished fifth a time of 7:07.70. Wisconsin won the semifinal in 6:42.20, while Ohio State (6:43.31) and Clemson (6:46.54) advanced to the A Final. Minnesota will race against Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan State, Texas and Central Florida in tomorrow’s 11:30 a.m. race.
In the Varsity Four competition, the Gophers finished second in their respective heat. Virginia won the heat in a time of 7:30.90. Minnesota’s boat of coxswain Nicolle Fisher, Christine Beauparlant, Kathryn Switalski, Shannon Gates and Michele Peterson, added a time of 7:40.46. Tennessee followed in third in 7:58.22. In the semifinals, the Gophers posted a time of 7:38.47, but Wisconsin (7:32.30), Michigan (7:34.45) and Iowa (7:36.31 ) posted the top three times of semifinals to advance to tomorrow’s A Final. The Gophers will face Tennessee, Central Florida, Ohio State, Texas and Notre Dame at 11:10 a.m.
