McGinnis 21st in NCAA Decathlon

Minnesota senior R.J. McGinnis finished 21st in the decathlon in the third day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Friday. McGinnis, the 2010 Big Ten champ, struggled from the get-go and tallied 6,650 points.
Oregon’s Ashton Eaton continued his dominance in the event, winning with 8,457 points, over 650 more than his nearest competitor.
McGinnis started the second day with a time of 15.84 in the 110-meter high hurdles. He marked a throw of only 97-1 in the discus, before clearing 13-1 1/2 in the pole vault and throwing the javelin a distance of 152-5. McGinnis completed the decathlon by running a time of 4:55.45 in the 1,500 meters.
Senior Matt Fisher competed in the NCAA meet in the high jump but did not clear the opening height of the competition – 6-8 3/4.
Minnesota has one athlete left in the NCAA Championships. Senior Chris Rombough will compete in the final of 5,000 meters on Saturday.
CBS will televise a portion of the final day live from noon to 2 p.m. CT.
