Griak's Legacy Continues...Snotty Nose Tough

The legendary outing of the Roy Griak Snotty Nose Tough Golf Open and Annual Bike Ride on June 21 was another successful event. In fact for one golfer, U of M staffer Mike McDonald, it was a once-in-a-lifetime day. McDonald, who works as the Turf Manager of TCF Stadium, clubbed a hole-in-one on the 16th hole at the Phalen Golf Course in St. Paul.

The event was sponsored by the Golden Gopher men’s track & field and cross country programs to raise funds for the University of Minnesota Track and Cross Country Program and the Endowed Scholarship Program.

After a round of golf or an exhilarating bike ride, the group gathered for a barbeque lunch, fellowship, and prize and raffle giveaways. With the 2010 indoor and outdoor Big Ten championship trophies displayed proudly behind him, Golden Gopher head coach Steve Plasencia welcomed the party, introduced his staff and the student-athletes in attendance.

Though a nice bike was top raffle prize, perhaps the best received prizes was a plague displaying one of Roy Griak’s famous sayings, “Gol dang it, you need to be snotty nose tough!”
