Foltz Hired as Rowing's Novice Coach

University of Minnesota rowing head coach Wendy Davis has announced the hiring of Andrew Foltz as an assistant coach. Foltz begins his role immediately and will coach the novice team. Along with Davis, he joins the staff with assistant coach Becca Carlton, rigger Tom Perry and graduate assistant Liz Van Zeyl.
“We are happy to have Andy joining us this coming year,” Davis said. “We are excited to have him bring new ideas and energy to our novice program. Becca, Tom, Liz and I look forward to a great year for the 2011 season.”
Prior to his position at Minnesota, Foltz served as a volunteer coach and a graduate assistant with the University of Washington. As a volunteer with the Huskies, Foltz assisted with the novice coaching and helped develop training plans for on and off water workouts. While at Washington, the Second Novice Eight, which he coached, earned a win against powerhouse Washington State, as well as a win at the Windermere Cup. During the 2008-09 season as a graduate assistant, Foltz coached the Third and Fourth Novice Eight boats and assisted with the 2N8. Along with his coaching abilities, Foltz also assisted with recruiting, coaches clinics. During his time with the Huskies, the novice team had two undefeated seasons and had two Pac-10 championships in the First novice Eight.
Foltz also was the assistant junior girls coach with the Sammamish Rowing Association in 2007-08. During that time, he coached the Varsity Lightweight 8+, 4+ and 2x to National Championship qualifications in 2008 as well as coaching multiple boats to silver medals at the US Rowing NW Regional Championships. Under his tutelage, the club’s Junior Varsity 4 also won a gold medal at regional championships.
Foltz graduated from Western Washington in 2007 with an undergraduate degree in exercise and sport science with a sport psychology specialization. He went on to earn a master’s degree in intercollegiate athletic leadership from Washington in 2009.
“I am extremely excited and thankful for the opportunity to get to coach some of the finest athletes in the country,” Foltz said. “I am looking forward to creating a high level of competition within our program to gain a high level of results.”
