Men's Tennis To Compete In The Chowder Fest

9/30/2010 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis

The men's tennis team competes in its second fall tournament this weekend at The Chowder Fest in Boston, Mass. The team is coming off a strong showing at last week's Denver Pioneer Invitational in Denver, Colo., that saw sophomore Rok Bonin win the individual title with a 4-0 record.

Bonin will be playing this week in Boston, as will Sebastian Gallego. The senior from Colombia is ranked No. 48 in the Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings and did not compete last week in Denver. This will be his first appearance of the fall.

Gallego was 20-11 last year and earned team Most Valuable Player honors for the second straight season to become the seventh player to win the award in consecutive years and first since Raoul Schwark in 2006-07. He finished the year ranked 68th in the country as the eighth alternate to the NCAA individual tournament. Gallego was also Minnesota's lone all-Big Ten selection. He went 5-8 against nationally-ranked opponents and faced nine top-50 opponents.

The entire team will join Bonin and Gallego at The Chowder Fest except for freshman Ben Mirkin and Senior Tobias Wernet. The No. 71-ranked Wernet is not competing because he will be representing Minnesota at the D'Novo/ITA Men's Division I All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., starting on Monday, Oct. 4.
