The University of Minnesota men's and women's swimming and diving teams each defeated host Wisconsin on the road Friday night at the Natatorium in Madison, Wisc. The Gopher men opened their season and Big Ten action with a 183-105 victory to move to 1-0 on the season and 1-0 in league competition, while the Gopher women improved to 4-0 on the year and 2-0 in the Big Ten with a 177-121 win over the Badgers.
"This was our first meet together this season and I thought both the men and the women put together great performances against a quality opponent," head men's and women's coach Kelly Kremer said. "I thought the women were impressive and this was an outstanding start to the season for the men."
The women's team won nine of 16 events and posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in five of those competed during the Big-Ten event, with freshman Tori Simenec leading all Gophers with three victories.
Simenec tallied her first win of the dual meet with a 1:48.90 mark in the 200 freestyle. She then finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.17, before finishing off the day with a victory as part of the 400 freestyle relay team with a time of 3:23.15 along with Jessica Plant, Marissa Davies and Erin Caflisch.
Sophomore Tess Behrens added two wins against the Badgers and posted her third NCAA provisional qualifying time of the season in the 100 backstroke by touching the wall in a time of 54.75. She added a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.93.
Senior Ashley Steenvoorden and sophomore Maggie Keefer also posted two wins apiece for Minnesota, with Steenvoorden claiming first-place honors in the 1000 freestyle (9:49.39) and the 500 freestyle (4:50.01), while Keefer recorded two NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks in both 1 meter diving and 3 meter diving with scores of 315.30 and 301.80, respectively.
Junior Haley Spencer was narrowly defeated in the 200 breaststroke, but still registered a NCAA provisional qualifying time after touching the wall in 2:15.64.
The Gopher women are back in action Friday, Nov. 4, when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for a Big Ten dual meet vs. Iowa.
