Van Swol Earns Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Accolades

University of Minnesota sophomore Kyler Van Swol earned his first-career Men's Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award Tuesday afternoon following a strong showing in the Minnesota Grand Prix last weekend, the league office announced.
Van Swol qualified for the Olympic trials in both the 100 LC meter and 200 LC meter butterfly events over the course of the three-day event, while also placing first as part of both the 400 LC meter freestyle relay (3:26.59) and the 400 LC meter medley relay (3:37.10), and third as part of the 800 LC meter freestyle relay (7:41.02).
On Friday night, Van Swol placed sixth in the Championship Final of the 100 LC meter butterfly with a time of 53.91, which was the fastest time for a collegiate swimmer this year, before following up his impressive performance by winning the 400 LC meter freestyle relay along with teammates Zach Bolin, Hrvoje Capan and Derek Toomey.
Van Swol once again competed in the Championship Final on Saturday, this time placing seventh in the 200 LC meter butterfly after touching the wall in 2:05.05. But, it was in the preliminaries where the sophomore made the Olympic trials cut, posting a time of 2:04.37.
The day came to an end for Van Swol when he, along with Capan, Matt Benecki and Mike Vernoia, took home third-place honors in the 800 LC meter freestyle relay after clocking in at 7:41.02.
Van Swol capped off his stellar weekend with another first-place showing as part of the 400 meter medley relay in a time of 3:47.10, along with Jared Anderson, Bolin and Toomey.
Also on Sunday, Van Swol placed 15th in the B Final of the 200 LC meter individual medley Sunday night with a time of 2:09.91, and finished with a time of 53.32 in the 100 LC freestyle preliminaries earlier in the day.
