Gophers Win One, Lose One at Big Ten Match Play

Participating in their first event of the spring season, the Gophers defeated Penn State, 3-1-2 in the first round of the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. on Friday but dropped their quaterfinal matchup with number nine seed Illinois, 5-0-1 later on in the afternoon.
Playing a match-play format, six golfers from each team competed head- to-head in both matches.
Unable to carry over momentum from a big win over Penn State in the first round of the event, Minnesota wasn't able to muster a win, lost fives matches, and halved one versus the Illini in the Quaterfinals. Senior Donald Constable managed to halve his match wih Scott Langley, but the Gophers lost the next five decisions.
With the loss, Minnesota will play Michigan in the consilation bracket tomorrow at 7:24 AM. Live scoring can be followed at www.ajga.com.
In the match versus Penn State, Minnesota came away victorious, winning three matches, losing one, and halving two others.
Senior Donald Constable havled the #1 match against T.J Howe in a battle of each team's top player. Sophomore Erik Van Rooyen picked up a huge 4&3 victory over the Nitty Lion's Anthony DeGol which put the Gophers into the lead for good. David Haley was able to his match, and Shang Zhi pulled an impressive 7&6 domination in his contest.
Freshman Alex Guagert was edged 3&2, while Sophomore Jon Trasamar sealed the victory with a 5&4 win to put Minnesota into the next round.
