Gutesa Leads Gophers At NCAA Second Day

Senior Ivan Gutesa qualified for the championship final of the 100 breaststroke to highlight Minnesota’s swims this afternoon at the NCAA Championships at University Aquatic Center. Minnesota’s 200 medley relay also earned a berth in the consolation final tonight. Minnesota is in 13th place as a team after the first day of competition.

Gutesa broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 53.03 and reached the championship final for the first time in his career with the sixth-best time overall. He also became Minnesota’s first finalist in the event since Jeff Hackler in 2003. Gutesa broke the school record of 53.17 set in 2009.

The Gophers posted a season-best time in the 200 medley relay to get the session off to a great start. The team of Goran Majlat , Ivan Gutesa , Kevin Baseheart and Michael Richards turned in a time of 1:25.80 which was a .31 improvement from the Big Ten Championships. Majlat opened with a split of 22.21 and Gutesa continued an impressive postseason with a breaststroke split of 23.74, which was the second-fastest of the event. Baseheart posted a 20.91 while Richards anchored in 18.94, also the second-best of the event. Only Texas’ Jimmy Feigen was able to anchor under 19 seconds as well (18.82).

Minnesota had three swimmers in the prelims of the 100 butterfly. Freshman Kyler Van Swol finished 37th in 47.76 while senior Kevin Baseheart was 44th in 48.25 and senior Nadav Kochavi was 45th in 48.33.

Minnesota will also have the 800 freestyle relay in action in tonight’s timed finals while senior diver Drew Brown will compete in 3-meter diving. The finals begin at 7 p.m. this evening.
