On the final morning of preliminaries at the 2011 NCAA Championships, Minnesota’s 400 freestyle relay qualified for the championship final with the sixth-best time. The Gophers are in 14th place as a team entering the final night of competition.

The 400 free relay team of Michael Richards , Curt Carlson , Zach Bolin and Derek Toomey turned in a season-best time of 2:51.76, almost a five-tenths improvement from the previous best set at the Big Ten Championships. Richards clocked a career-best time of 42.95 leading off the relay while Carlson posted an impressive 42.64. Bolin answered in 43.13 and Toomey anchored in 42.86. California posted the top time of the session in 2:49.61, followed by Auburn in 2:49.73.

In the 200 butterfly, freshman Kyler Van Swol had a fantastic swim, posting a lifetime-best 1:46.54 to finish 26th. His previous best time was 1:47.26 set at the Big Ten Championships last month. Senior Kevin Baseheart placed 30th in 1:47.37 and senior Nadav Kochavi was 36th in 1:49.30.

In the 200 breaststroke, senior Ivan Gutesa came just .56 seconds from the consolation final in finishing 21st with a time of 1:55.88. It ends a fantastic final collegiate meet for Gutesa who earned first team All-America honors last night in placing eighth in the 100 breaststroke. He also earned two All-America awards on the 200 and 400 medley relays.

In the 100 freestyle, senior Curt Carlson finished 20th in a season-best time of 43.31. Toomey, Richards and Bolin elected to skip the prelims of the 100 freestyle to prepare for the 400 freestyle relay.

Senior diver Drew Brown will compete in the prelims of the platform diving competition this afternoon as well. Tonight’s finals will begin at 7 p.m.
