Gophers Finish 15th At NCAA Championships

Minnesota’s 400 freestyle relay finished eighth tonight in the final session of the NCAA Championships at University Aquatic Center. The Gophers placed 15th as a team with 91 points, extending its streak of 20 consecutive seasons with a top 15 finish.
Minnesota ended the Championships with an eighth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Michael Richards , Curt Carlson , Zach Bolin and Derek Toomey earned first team All-America honors. Richards opened in 43.01, followed by Carlson (42.72), Bolin (43.49) and Toomey (43.44). The same team combined to finish seventh in the 200 free relay on Thursday. The Gophers earned first team All-America honors in the 400 free relay for the fourth straight year and All-America honors for the 10th consecutive season.
The relay also ends the collegiate careers of two of the most-accomplished swimmers in school history, Richards and Carlson. Richards, the 2011 Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships after sweeping the 50 and 100 freestyles, ends his career with 12 All-America awards. Carlson wraps up his career with 13 awards.
Drew Brown became Minnesota’s first two-time All-American diver since Dan Croaston in 2001. Brown finished 16th on the platform with a score of 329.10.
All 10 of Minnesota’s athletes at the meet earned All-America honors. With Derek Toomey , Goran Majlat and Kyler Van Swol earning All-America honors for the first time, they bring Dennis Dale ’s career tally of different All-Americans to 95. He has coached the 95 athletes to 504 All-America certificates.
California won its first NCAA team title since 1980 with 493 points, ahead of Texas (470.5), Stanford (403), Arizona (302), Florida (291) and Auburn (269.5).
