The University of Minnesota rowing team competed in the first of the two-day Charles River Challenge, today, in Boston. The Golden Gophers won the Second Varsity Eight, finished third in the Varsity Eight and fourth in the Varsity Four.
The Second Varsity Eight of Christine Beauparlant at stroke, Ellen Hughes , Leah Rogotzke , Kathryn Switalski , Katrina Pichelli , Ali Haws , Kate Ladell , Maddy Bourgeois at bow and coxswain Sara Baldvins earned the win. The Gophers edged out Radcliffe by five tenths of a second. Minnesota and Radcliffe exchanged leads throughout the race, but Minnesota sprinted in the last 300 meters of the race to win it.
The Varsity Eight of coxswain Linnea Trandem , Cassie Drozynski at stroke, Teresa Logemann , Tracy Merth , Erika Berg , Kayla Thom , Sarah Krueger , Rachel Sartor and Molly Kalmoe at bow placed fourth in their flight. Dartmouth won the event in a time of 6:37.7, followed by Radcliffe (6:45.3) and Minnesota (6:51.2). Syracuse came in fourth in 6:54.7.
The Gopher Varsity Four boat of coxswain Nicolle Fisher , Alexandria Voss , Sarah Sobek, Caitlin Boon and Katie Anderson at bow finished fourth in their flight. Minnesota finished in a time of 7:58.2, but Dartmouth won the event in 7:48.9.
“It was nice to see our Second Varsity Eight get the win,” head coach Wendy Davis said. “They have been rowing fast and keep improving each race this spring. The weather was tough out here today with the wind, but it’s something that you have to battle each week, especially here in the Basin.”
The Gophers will compete again tomorrow. Due to weather conditions, the event will most likely be changed into a head race and a timed final.
