Wernet, who jumped from No. 100 to No. 67 in the ITA rankings released today, was 2-0 in singles play last weekend. He was the only Gopher to win both of his singles matches, as Minnesota closed out the regular season with road wins at No. 18 Illinois and No. 66 Iowa.
On Friday, Wernet upset tenth-ranked Dennis Nevolo of Illinois in three sets. Wernet prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles against Nevolo. He then downed Iowa's Marc Bruche 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday at the first position to improve to 4-2 at the top position this season.
Wernet finished the spring season with an 8-2 record in Big Ten play and was 16-4 overall. He leads the No. 19 Gophers into the Big Ten tournament this weekend. The No. 19 ranking is the second-highest ranking for Minnesota this year. The Gophers were ranked 16th in the first week of March. The third-seeded Gophers, who received a first-round bye, will play the winner of the Penn State-Wisconsin match at 2 p.m. on Friday in the second round. Minnesota won 5-2 at tournament-host Wisconsin on Feb. 13 and defeated Penn State 6-1 on April 15 at home.
