Wernet Named Big Ten Player of the Week

Minnesota senior Tobias Wernet was named the Big Ten Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week today.
Wernet earned four points last weekend as Minnesota won two Big Ten road matches against ranked teams in Michigan and Michigan State. The unranked Wernet upset No. 57 Jason Jung of Michigan 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at second singles on Sunday as the No. 24 Gophers upset No. 22 Michigan 5-2 to reclaim the Little Brown Jug. Jung had won five straight matches and had not lost since March 11 prior to losing to Wernet in three sets. It was Jung's fifth loss of the spring season and only his second defeat against an unranked player.
Wernet beat Michigan State's Ronnie Hulewicz 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday as Minnesota topped the Spartans 4-3. In doubles, Wernet teamed with Rok Bonin to win 8-4 doubles matches on Saturday and Sunday.
The Mainz, Germany, native is 11-3 in singles this season and has a team-best 8-2 record in his last 10 matches. In addition to beating Jung, Wernet also has a win against No. 55 Enej Bonin of Denver this year.
Wernet is Minnesota's first Big Ten Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week since Sebastian Gallego won the honor on April 20, 2010.
Minnesota opens a four-match homestand on Friday (April 8) when they host No. 27 Indiana at 3 p.m. at Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers then play No. 64 Purdue at noon on Sunday (April 9).
