Roy Griak Honored with Frank Kara Integrity Award

Minnesota legend Roy Griak was honored with the Frank Kara Integrity Award at the spring Minnesota Athletics Department meeting. The award honors an individual from the Athletic Department who demonstrates the integrity in athletics that were characteristic of the award’s namesake, Frank Kara, who served as the Director of Athletic Compliance from 2000-07. The purpose of the award is to identify and reward acts of integrity, and to encourage a culture of compliance that is intended to be one of the hallmarks of University of Minnesota Athletics.
Griak has worked in the Golden Gopher Athletic Department for nearly 50 years, first as a coach of men’s cross country/track for 33 years from 1963-96, then as an administrative assistant of that program for the last 15 years. Griak has been instrumental in several fundraising initiatives and is responsible for bringing in over a million dollars for endowed scholarships and various projects for the Minnesota men’s track/cross country program.
Griak also competed for the Gophers earning varsity letters in cross country and track before he graduated from the U in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in education.
