Former Golden Gopher Donald Constable, playing out of Spring Hill Golf Club, shot a two-under par 69 in the final round of the 108th Minnesota State Amateur to claim the title by three strokes. He becomes the 22nd player with Gopher ties to win the tournament and first since Andrew Paulson did so in 2006.
Constable, who led wire-to-wire and finished with a seven-under par 206 (66-71-69) at White Bear Yacht Club, was the runner-up in the 2010 Minnesota State Amateur and won the 2010 North & South Amateur to claim 2010 Minnesota Golf Association Player of the Year.
A native of Minnetonka, Minn., Constable finished his collegiate career by leading the Gophers in stroke average at 72.30 on the season, the seventh-lowest single-season stroke average in the history of the program. His two-year Gopher average of 73.07 is the fourth-lowest in school history.
A Second Team All-Big Ten performer as a senior, Constable finished his final campaign having posted five top-10 and 10 top-20 finishes in 12 tournaments, including runner-up honors at the Rod Myers Invitational in October.
Robert Bell, who will be entering his junior season at Minnesota, started the final round in second place behind his former teammate but a final-round 73 dropped him into a tie for sixth place. He finished with a 54-hole score of 213 (70, 70, 73).
Bell's teammates Jon Trasamar, Tim Peterzen and Colton Buege finished in ties for 17th, 27th and 43rd place, respectively. Also, former Gopher Adam Dooley, the 1999 Minnesota Amateur champion, finished in a tie for 57th place.
The Gophers will open the 2011-12 season on Sept. 11-12 by hosting the seventh annual Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata.
