Five University of Minnesota rowers have earned spots on the Big Ten Conference's Distinguished Scholar Athletes list.

To group were among 534 student-athletes from across the Big Ten, including 68 Gophers, to achieve the prestigious honor. In order to be considered a Distinguished Scholar Athlete, individuals must have compiled a 3.7 grade point average or higher during the previous academic year.

The list of Gopher rowers honored include: junior Madeleine Bourgeois (Leisure Studies); sophomore Natalie Foshag (Psychology); senior Molly Kalmoe (Ecology Evolution/Behavior and Physiology); junior Leah Rogotzke (History); and sophomore Jennifer VanVliet (Physiology).

In February of 2008, Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the conference academic recognition to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution.

However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student-athlete's academic career.

Congratulations to these hard-working student-athletes!
