Recap: Gophers at Nationals, Days 1-2

Several current and former Golden Gophers were in action during the first two days of the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. The championships started on Tuesday and continue through Saturday.
Former Gopher David Plummer, who finished fifth at the FINA World Championships last week, placed eighth in the 100-meter backstroke on Wednesday. He finished the race in 54.74 seconds.
On Tuesday, current Gopher swimmer Mike Vernoia (who was a junior this past season) made the 'B' final in the 400-meter freestyle. He finished 20th overall with a time of 3:58.47. Vernoia also competed in the 200 free (43rd) and swam with the Gophers' 4x100 free relay (15th).
Other finishers with Gopher ties included Matt Benecki (t-66th) in the 400 free; Jared Anderson (48th), Josh Hall (51st), and Evan Lee-To (122nd) in the 100 breast; Matt Papenfuss (78th) in the 200 free; and Kyler Van Swol (38th) in the 200 fly. Minnesota Aquatics' 15th-place 4x100 free relay team was comprised of Zach Bolin, Vernoia, Van Swol, and Nathan Jobe.
