Two Golden Gophers, both freshmen this past year, competed in Thursday night's finals session at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. Kyler Van Swol swam in the 'A' final in the 100-meter butterfly, and Derek Toomey won the 'C' final of the 50 freestyle, finishing 21st overall.
Van Swol finished in 53 seconds flat to place eighth. He was seeded eighth after swimming the exact same time in prelims. Toomey won his final heat with a time of 22.85 seconds after being seeded 28th overall (23.04). Both Gophers earned All-America honors as freshmen, and Toomey won a Big Ten Championship anchoring Minnesota's 200-yard freestyle relay.
Other current and former Gophers who competed on Thursday included Zach Bolin (67th), David Plummer (t-106th), and Nathan Jobe (t-112th) in the 50 free; and Kevin Baseheart (81st) in the 100 fly.
