Minnesota's run at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., came to an end today when two Gophers fell in semifinal competition.
The tournament featured participants from 26 schools including Auburn, The Citadel, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Liberty, Lipscomb, LSU, Mercer, Minnesota, Mississippi State, NC State, Samford, South Carolina, Stetson, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Winthrop. This weekend marked the 44th edition of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, and it is the oldest fall college tennis tournament in America.
The field was divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. Nine Gophers competed in the event and there were three Minnesota players in each singles division.
Sophomore Juan Pablo Ramirez and freshman Eric Frueh advanced to the semifinals of the third flight after posting 3-0 records in the first two days of competition. Both Gophers saw their tournaments come to an end in semifinal play.
Ramirez, who joined the Gophers last January, was felled by Davidson's Calum Gee 6-4, 6-4 in one semifinal.
Frueh, who is from Rochester, Minn., lost 6-2, 6-0 to Stuart Tierney of Lipscomb in the other semifinal.
The other seven Gophers participating in the event had all been eliminated from competition prior to today.
Minnesota returns to play at the Oct. 1-9 ITA All-American tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
