The Minnesota women's swimming and diving team opens its 2011-12 season Oct. 7 vs. Big Ten-foe Michigan at the University Aquatic Center, and instead of waiting until the final meet of the year, the Golden Gophers will honor their seven seniors prior to the home-opening event.

Marissa Davies, Cory Miller, Melissa Nelson, Ashley Steenvoorden, Kristen Steenvoorden, Lissa Tommerdahl and Hannah Whitehead will be the first group of seniors to have their final campaign celebrated prior to the first meet of the year.

Davies is a two-time NCAA honorable mention All-American in the 800 free relay, while Miller was a member of the 200-medley team that finished third at the Minnesota Challenge last season.

Nelson was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team as a sophomore, the same year that she won four individual events and was part of four winning relays at the Minnesota Challenge.

Ashley Steenvoorden heads into her final season as a six-time All-American, five-time Big Ten champion and the 2011 U.S. national champion in the 400-meter freestyle, while her sister Kristen Steenvoorden is a two-time NCAA Championship participant and has twice been named an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Tommerdahl finished fifth in the 1,650 free at the Big Ten Championships last season, and Whitehead is a six-time All-American, competing in the 800 free relay, 400 medley relay and the 200 medley relay.
