On the first day of competition at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Seattle, Wash., Minnesota's 200 freestyle relay team of Zach Bolin, Hrvoje Capan, Ben Griggs and Derek Toomey claimed All-America Honorable Mention honors by placing 12th overall with a time of 1:18.47 in the B Final.
"We didn't have many opportunities in terms of events and chances to score, but I think we made the most of the ones we had," men's and women's head coach Kelly Kremer said about the day. "In our 200 free relay, we qualified in 15th this morning and we were really pleased to move up to 12th in the finals. All four of the guys did a great job."
The squad finished closely behind Big Ten's Ohio State and Michigan, while California won the event with a time of 1:16.58.
Competition continues tomorrow with prelims beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT.
"We don't have many opportunities, so we have to take full advantage of all of them," Kremer said. "Tomorrow we have Kyler Van Swol, who has had a great year, competing in the 100 fly. He should be fun to watch. Our divers get better as they go up, and tomorrow we have 3 meter and the guys are excited to do a lot better. We'll finish with our 800 free relay, which is an event we feel that we can score in. It should be fun tomorrow."
The following are the list of events for Friday:
200-yard Medley Relay
400-yard Individual Medley
100-yard Butterfly
200-yard Freestyle
