After failing to qualify in the 10,000m, senior Hassan Mead focused his attention to the 5,000 meter event as his last chance for the 2012 Olympics. So far it has paid off.

His trek in the 5,000m began at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. last night where he placed fifth in his preliminary heat to automatically advance to the final event. At the end of the day, his time of 13:44.56 ranked fifth overall in a field of 25 competitors.

The final event is scheduled for 9:38 p.m. CST, last on the slate on June 28th after the trials pick back up from a two-day break. In addition to being in the top three, a runner must hit the Olympic A Standard of 13:33.00 to gain a spot on the U.S. team for London.
