First year tennis head coach Chuck Merzbacher has announced today the addition of Paula Rincon Otero to the women's program. After signing an acceptance of admission, Rincon is set to merge with the Gophers for the 2012-13 season, joining fellow recruits Kelsey Frechette (Rochester, Minn.) and Jessika Mozia (Littleton, Colo.) as part of the incoming class.
A native of Madrid, Spain, Rincon has much experience on both a national and international level. After choosing to compete with a Madrid-based tennis club rather than playing on her school's squad, she was able to participate in the Madrid Regional Championships and qualify for the Spain National Championships. Rincon will transfer to the University of Minnesota from University Autonoma Madrid where she won the bronze medal at the University Championship of Spain last season.
"Paula is a very talent player that has a large selection of shots," said Merzbacher. "She will be able to create opportunities with her variety. I can also see her helping in the doubles line-up because of her strong net play."
The 2012-13 season begins this weekend when Minnesota hosts its annual Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center.
