Senior Rok Bonin has been named the Big Ten Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office this afternoon. The honor is the first for the Koper, Slovenia native. The last Gopher to earn the weekly award was Julian Dehn on Nov. 16, 2011.
Competing against Virginia Commonwealth at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event, Bonin improved his spring season record to a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles competition. As the No. 24 doubles team in the country, he and teammate Mathieu Froment defeated the unranked pairing of Alexis Heugas and Claes Goransson by a score of 8-3. On the singles sides, No. 49-ranked Bonin was the lone Gopher to notch a victory, dominating No. 45 Max Wennakoski with a 6-2, 6-2 mark at the No. 2 position.
Minnesota will continue its season this weekend on the road at Tulsa and Arkansas.
