The University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving teams received their first loss of the season as they trailed the University of Florida 172-124. The dual was the second home non-conference competition for the Golden Gophers at the University Aquatics Center. The defeat sends the men into a record of 1-1 in the year and 1-4 for the overall record against the Gators. The last time Minnesota outscored the Gators was in 2006 when they won 161-139 in Florida.

The Florida Gators now stand at 1-0 in dual-meet action for the current season.

Despite the Gators winning the majority of events with 12 out of 16, Minnesota stopped a clean defeat by claiming four major events. Co-Captain Derek Toomey captured the Gophers first win of the day when he swam a 20.07 to earn a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle. Toomey continued his solid performance by earning two second-place honors in the relay department. To start off the dual the men's 400 medley relay team consisting of Daryl Turner, Nick Hatanaka, Kyler Van Swol, and Toomey completed the race in a time of 3:17.85.

The second victory for Minnesota was achieved in the 13th event by Kyler Van Swol. Completing the race in a time of 48.55, he took home the 100 butterfly.

Minnesota divers accomplished strong finishes by claiming four out of the six top places for both the one-meter and three-meter dives. While Florida took home first in the one-meter, Manny Pollard (339.75) and Dylan Zoe (332.03) followed with second and third place. Dylan Zoe then went on in the 14th event to earn Minnesota's last victory. By receiving a score of 340.58 in the three-meter Zoe earned his first dual win for the 2013-14 season.

In the last event of the day Minnesota earned some last minute team points when they contributed a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. A combination of Daryl Turner, Van Swol, Carl Newenhouse, and Toomey had a time of 2:59.64.

After back-to-back home dual meets in two weekends, Minnesota hits the road to compete in their first Big Ten Conference meet. The Gophers head to Madison, Wisc. On Oct. 18-19 to take on the University of Wisconsin Badgers.
